Adulting Made Easy: Living Away From Home

Being flustered 24×7, cleaning the house of take-away food and leftover spring rolls, dealing with a chatty roommate and having to deal with bills, timelines and assignments – yep, that blows. With a deep sigh, we know what it feels like to be a twenty-something duckling struggling everyday without your own. Being an adult is never easy, but nobody warned you about the bittersweet experience being away from home  is, did they?

What we cannot deny is that getting into what is hands down the best university in India – Delhi University sure is a dream for most. Outstanding research and great professors to help guide along the way, DU proves to be a haven for most undergraduates. Every year, applicants from all over the world fight tooth and nail to get that one glistening seat.

Congratulations to you for getting into college, kiddo! But before you get overwhelmed by the shakedown and the big move out of what you have called home for ages, we are here to let you in on some of the secrets that are going to help you survive this change of epic proportions. We understand it puts you in a teeny bit of a spot given that you are not exactly an oldie wholly capable of taking care of themselves or a child who can’t do without their family. Since you are stuck midway, let us help you walk two steps further towards adulating while you always, in your heart, hold that wish of being a child close.

Now that school is over and college routine has set in, do not fret over the mess you find yourself in. Keep your dirty laundry and YouTube recipe instruction video on pause, it is time we enter the transitional phase!


  1. It Is All About the Schedule!

Breathe, sit down and have a sip of that frappe. If you’re taking to take our advice, we suggest you keep your stress at an arm’s length for a good couple of weeks. What is college if not partying out of your wits and enjoying every second of it? So, gulp it down with each passing day and let the storm settle. The first few ones are going to be pretty darn tough and we guarantee you that. But we can promise you that it is totally worth the ride.

But as you register for classes and manage business as usual, there is going to be a faint sense of grieving. Take moving away from home with a pinch, and work out a schedule that works best for you. From class timings, club meetings, activities and grocery shopping – plan it all in advance.

Nothing like being served with diced mango and kiwi to your own room, but now that you have to go out in the world, you are going to want to come back to a set routine. After all, what are you waking up for if not the evening chai with the buds? Time to adult up!


  1. Find A Suitable Pace

It is rather easy to fall into the rut of all that you should be doing now that you are part of a gigantic institution. The mighty Delhi University is rather famous for being the hotspot where students are swamped with coursework and extra-curricular activities. But do not start beating yourself up for not getting things in order in the first month. You are a fuccha, after all.

Take your time to let things pick up their pace. And once they do, you are going to be something to reckon with.  So long as you set realistic expectations for yourself. Drop the unimaginable weight of being ideal off your shoulders, and take things one at a time till you get there.

  1. Did You Get Yourself That Cupcake?

If you think we are going to let you get off your stress and pressure without celebrating survival, you are so very wrong! Every little achievement in your initial phase is a call for treat. And believe us, if there is one thing you are going to remember when you are out – it will be this. The number of hours you spend making memories trumps all.

So every time you get it through a tough day, a nasty fight, the toughest assignment or a mean landlord – buy yourself that artificial oxytocin.


  1. Ask For Help

This is the most adult thing you could possibly do for yourself. Being the new kid on the block and having to juggle everything can be tough. The thing about stress and being overworked is that it tends to take a toll on anyone. From your health to your studies, it is all at risk. Now if you forget to take care of yourself when you are away from home, who will? And sometimes, taking care of you requires asking for help.

So remember this the next time you cannot cope with the pressure – find a hand to hold. You might not like it given that you are ready to conquer the world on your own … we get it. Delhi University is not only a place for academic excellence; it is also a home to most. So find yourself your family and we assure you are going to be taken care of.

  1. Make Amends With The Roomie

Stepping outside of safe territories means you need to armor up to the outside world. Don’t get all worked up now, we are only warning you about adulating well in advance.  It is hard enough to say goodbye to your childhood friends, your comfortable school life and your family. Adjusting to a new environment, strange specimen and sharing your private space with other people can be off-putting for most. So, when you are out there fighting over the extension cord or the electricity bill, take a minute to let your hair down and talk.

Being on bad terms with anybody in your close proximity is not good, considering how home-sickness troubles everyone. We suggest you stick with that empathy when you walk through Delhi University’s doors and put a brave smile on. Who knows, you might just make a new best friend.


  1. Lists Are A Gift

A favour from the gods is the brilliant design of lists. You must have figured out by now how important little slips and notes are. Having a list ready with the day’s plan and vegetables to buy is a blessing no less. Imagine what catastrophe it would be if you got back home without your dinner! Since you are an adult now and gainfully student-ed, you are going to be thrilled when you have sort through those memos and entries. That aside, what good is your degree from DU if you can’t manage your sabzi stock?

Yep, lists are your go-to.
