7 Things They Won’t Teach You In the First Semester

A little bird told us that after spending thousands of hours with your 12th grade books, you have finally managed to reach your destination! We assume that you have been officially welcomed as fucchas to the best university in India. Now that you are a part of the Delhi University family and all set to attend your grade A colleges, let us get down to business – how are you supposed to survive? It is a man eat man world in the capital city Delhi and to be one of those thousands of lucky kids who made it to DU has its own surprises. Prepare to be baffled by the adult world of college education and living away from home. It is not only going to be filled with nerves, apprehensions, stress and an overworked schedule but also frolic, joy and cheap campus food.

The first semester at Delhi University is usually the one that has to bear the brunt of overwhelmed undergrads. As a fresher you will be introduced to a gazillion different kind of stimuli – both human and non. Jokes aside, it is also the best semester because it is not half as intimidating or anxiety provoking as the rest! So, here we are with an insider’s guide. With a list of all that they leave out in their curriculum, we as former Delhi University kids are here with things that you can relate to and warn against

So, get your mental notepads to work, because these 7 things are going to save your semester and ensure it is the best DU sem ever!

  1. You’ll Begin With Tears

You are always out and about with your new friends, attending lectures from 8-5, figuring out your working schedules and dealing with anda-bread issues … and then it hits you. Moving away from home and your high school buddies is bittersweet, but when those pangs of nostalgia make your body quiver – you would trade it all.

Although the first few months of college are filled with the max excitement there is, all it takes is some faint reminder of your mum’s Pav Bhaji or your Dadi’s chutney. Before you know it, your eyes begin to resemble an overflowing pond.

Yep, that is going to be your first semester.

  1.  You Will Worship E-Rickshaws

You are no longer a high school student, which means, no more bus rides or parents’ dropping you to school.

BUUUUT, now that you are a Delhi University newbie, you are going to learn to value those rides that prove to be a gift to students! Every major metro station exit in Delhi happens to be swamped with E rickshaws for students and workers, no matter the time. These rickshaws allow students to travel back and forth between DU campus and the metro station.  All for 10 rupees!

  1. Your Overloaded Suitcase Will Disappoint

Let us just all agree that all those endless fights with mom over clothes were futile. For everybody going to college, moving out is the clarion call for shopping and stuffing an entire wardrobe into a suitcase. But we can bet on the fact that once you landed in the world of Delhi University, you did not use even a fraction of the clothes you brought here. And that is pretty much the way it goes for freshers. Our advice? Only pack a number of clothes that you are ACTUALLY going to wear rather than carrying clothes that might come in handy.

Pro tip: Delhi University has a vibe of loose Pyjamas and XXL t-shirts. Given Delhi’s scorching heat of summer, we suggest you go with whatever you actually are comfortable in.

  1. You Need Chappals

DO NOT ENTER THOSE COMMON SHOWER ROOMS WITHOUT YOUR SLIPPERS ON.

Guys, we care about you and we would rather have you alive and disease-free than dead. Make no mistake, the legends did not gussy up the importance of personal hygiene. Now that you are staying with various people and sharing your bathrooms, you need to keep a check on it. So, do make sure that you are always wearing a pair of shower shoes before you enter that bacteria filled zone.

As for the rest, the city’s heat will probably kill you so take it from us Delhiites, chappals are your best friend. It will be painful to wear anything but chappal in this humid and hot weather with sweat inundating your favourite converse.

  1. You Will Make Weird Friends

The girl you sat next to during orientation or the boy you crushed on during admissions may not actually be there when you are leaving. We tend to latch on to the first friendly face we find in an alien space and it is only natural to want to cling to them till the end. However, as you grow through those 3 years of college life, you will realise that you are capable of being friends with different kinds of people. And those first semester people you swore would be at your wedding actually fade out into the background as you make stronger bonds. College life is pretty strange like that. Sometimes, you end with one best friend without whom you wouldn’t dare step into a classroom or a gigantic group of 20 that goes out for momos every day.

Either way, you are going to love people who are not necessarily like you at all, and dislike people you thought you would always want. But believe us, when you are all alone and crying homesick tears in sickness, there is going to be that one local friend family that will take you in as their own. And you will hold on to that one till the very end of time. Such is the exciting life of Delhi University!

  1. You’ll Find A New Home

We know you guys are smart enough to plan things ahead to avoid a fuss. So, make sure that you take a good look the most important factor – the place you stay at.

Getting into the college you have always dreamed of can be overwhelming considering all that is at stake for young minds and their potential. 1. Blink Once and It’s Done
